Spotting errors on your credit report is half the battle—fixing them is where the real work begins.
Disputing inaccuracies may sound intimidating, but it’s actually a structured, step-by-step process.
Step 1: Gather Evidence
Collect:
- Copies of reports with errors highlighted
- Bank statements, receipts, payoff letters
- Any documents showing the correct information
Step 2: Dispute With Credit Bureaus
You can dispute online or by mail, but certified mail is best for proof.
Your dispute letter must include:
- Full name, address, SSN (last 4)
- Report number (if available)
- Each specific error
- Why it’s wrong
- Proof documents
Step 3: Dispute With The Furnisher
Send a similar letter to the original creditor or collector.
They must investigate and respond—if they cannot verify the item, it must be corrected or removed.
Step 4: The 30-Day Timeline
Credit bureaus generally have 30 days to investigate. They must:
- Contact the furnisher
- Review your documents
- Update, correct, or delete inaccurate items
You will receive written results and a fresh copy of your credit report showing changes.
Step 5: If They Claim “Verified”
If an incorrect item remains:
- Re-dispute with additional evidence
- Add a consumer statement
- File a CFPB complaint if necessary
Step 6: Identity Theft Cases
For accounts you did NOT open:
- File an identity theft report at IdentityTheft.gov
- Freeze your credit
- Dispute as fraud with your theft affidavit attached
Disputing errors is like cleaning a window—you remove the smudges so lenders can see your true financial picture.
